After a stretch of 45 years with more of the personal research and development of one man, an educational psychologist with the understanding of five plus global languages: English, Portuguese, Chinese, Spanish and Italian, plus the many dialects. The result of this discovery of a universal human communication has been found and rediscovered by the journeys and passages in what Yih had called "his personal journey, a cross-cultural journey to the West" ... and now back to China. With the two other disciplines in full practice -- cultural anthropology and communications had granted Paul Yih the full development of a universal counseling language that is suitable to all "educators" and more.
The psychology of Round and Square is so called had come into the real picture by the cultural analysis of Yih tracking back from its basic tenets and roots -- and onto the first non "han" language written by Fuxi and in those signs deemed as pictographic signs known as Bagua and also Tai Qi, often written as Tai Chi. There are those two of the most dynamic universal phenomena of the "Round" and "Square" had its immense influence over time and space.
This is part of the 45 plus years of the Yih's personal use of this psychology of round and square, started as early as in 1975, prior to the full discovery of the real significance, not until Paul's 40 plus years with other global engagements, from the explorer of gemstones and minerals, to the global consulting work which had covered many parts of the world -- It is his exposure in and amongst the many Brazilian tribal groups in the midst of the Amazon. 12 years ago, with Paul personal retreat amongst his former colleagues from another era with Paul's closeness to the Roman Catholic religious group - The Salesians, in both Macau and Brazil, where Paul's own Chinese awakening has been ignited with his attempt to foster the languge of counseling and advising amongst the many tribes in and around the town of Sao Gabriel de Cachoeira, in the Upper Rio Negro, by the borders of both Colombia and Venezuela.
Yih's further pursuit with the two American psychologist, from Carl Rogers to Eric Berne had given Yih's first phase of the formation of his use of those two shapes and configuration with his students. From the location of Sao Grabiel de Cachoeira, and from this one major teacher/mentor/catalyst - Fr. Cabianchi, Osvaldo, who had given Yih a deeper meaning with the works of both Paulo Freire, the thinker, philosopher and also, the exposure to the best of the work of Darcy Ribeiro. The fusion of the works and value of these two great human figures had added to the bits and pieces of the early forms and the ingredients of the crescent psychology of round and square. 12 years later - the forming of the psychology of round and square is here with us.
Open Invitation / The global Pandemic Situation
The entire system of the Psychology of Round and Square is a new system into the realms of Educational Psychology, Cross-cultural psychology and also Commnicative Psychology. Paul Yih and the formation of the CCI -- Cross-Cultural Institute will continue to extend invitation to all global scholars who can see and share our vision. The members and partners at CCI will be welcoming all interested partners to further expand and to widening the use of this system of the Psychology of Round/Square with its application into the different cultural and linguistic groups.
Moreever, at this time of the global pandemics -- in see the rapid demand of the use of "Educational Online". We are most positive to see the launch of this use of the Psychology of Round/Square to become a viable tool to make it a new and practical language to all world counseling professionals.
It is our vision where the teaching and the pedagogy of the Psychology of Round/Square will give all world professionals who are engaged into all the human activities and in all sets of interpersonal communications field -- This psychology of Round/square will be able to provide all people with the most basic and funcational skills, wherever their future work and career may take them --These basic skills of this psychology will be of value to them and to use this as a "global guidance" in all areas of communications.
The Psychology of Round and Square

The idea in the formation of the Psychology of the Round and Square has been with me for over 60 years. The making of this branch of the psychology - In the area of both educational and also cultural. But all and all, it is all about the way we communicate, the way we express ourselves and where, it is the composition and also the combination of a long study and observation in my personal cross-cultural journey in life, with the observation of our common human behaviors. This cross-cultural journey started had started by my birth in Shanghai in a time and period which we can be called the Chinese Diaspora, This time and period of Diaspora is much broader than any other events, where we have been separated from our own cultural surroundings where we become making our adjustments to the other global environment. The entire idea of this Chinese Diaspora has to be re-studied with the varied discipline from psychology, cultural anthropology, sociology along with the other observation and discipline such as economics.
This branch of the psychology as so being named by these two shapes of round and square had “unbeknowingly” to myself - but these two shapes has been installed in my mindset ever since I was a youngster -- The round symbolizes the Heaven, or the sky -- and the cultural visual symbols had also cross the linguistic areas into the Western languages -- the round is also the first letter in the word ORDER. In Chinese it is written as 圆. It also represents the sky and the sky is written as such 天. The two horizontal strokes form the number 2 in Chinese -- These two horizontal strokes are written as such 二. These two lines also mean the separation of the sky and the earth both with the two “lines”. The character in and between the two lines is the character of men, or “ren” and it is written as such 人.
Next, the Square Shape has also been long known also to the Chinese meaning “earth”, as the earth in the character of two, or 二. The bottom strokes symbolizes land or earth.
Interesting enough, where I personally had shaped also the square or earth with the two letters of “L” , the first letter of the word LAW.
Throughout history if we dare to use these two symbols of round and square, where we can perceive over the centuries -- When there were the natural “order” with good rulers and effective administration, the overall harmony meaning peace and harmony is the round and atmospheric shape also of the sky.
However, whenever new rulers, conquerors and tyrants such as in the dynasty of Qin of China. Rulers loved the use of the “legalist” to install rigidity and harsh punishment, and also he had burned the books and the writing of Confucius and had abolished the Confucian teaching and codes.
Thus, these two shapes in what I called the Psychology of Round and Square have had its “atmospheric” exchanges over the centuries in the history of the Chinese as they also shaped and formed the Chinese “psyche"
Also, the Chinese have been address the Sky of 天 is like the West, the male figure or the “heavenly Father” and in the earliest Chinese written language before the use of the Han character -- from the book if I-ching or Yi-jing. It also symbolizes male, in the use of the sun 阳 and also the sky.
Whereas the symbolism of earth 地, representing the Yin 阴 element. I have named these are the cultural elements also as the Cultural Spheres (sm) in my writing about the Psychology of the Round and the Square.
The use of the shapes of Round and Square have their deep cultural significance in all the Chinese mindset or “psyche”. Thus it is this dualistic balance of the two shapes continued on with human development and the time and period of human evolution in history. The round and square as the basic elements of life has again been represented onto the early writing of the symbol by Fuxi and his pre written history in the use of the Han language we use today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuxi
The frequent use of the symbol of the Yin and Yang has been forever present in Tai Chi, or Tai Qi. This sign of Yin Yang in the midst of the configuration of Ba Gua -- showing this confluence of our life cycle -- with all the ups and downs, the exchanges of the round and squares. This symbol of the Yin and Yang and confluence as many of us have witnessed in the various river streams, where I have seem time and again upon my personal trips and storming grounds in the midst of the Amazon -- where the river or Rio Solimoes coming down from the Peruvian region(west) with its rocky sediments, meeting up with the Rio Negro and the rivers other sediments, by the decomposition of the greenery and its decomposition making the river acidic and dark -- that was one of the best confluence I have seen in my life.
I have been curious about human interaction ever since I was a youngster. Be that the harmonious time or times of conflicts. This had led to my earliest curiosity about human interactions, thus later on - Psychology As I have the rich experience of all the many personal adaptations in the use of the languages from region to region. As I was born in Shanghai and where my first language was the Shanghai dialect. But in and around my surroundings, yes, the CS, my early Cultural Sphere, as an infant, the multiple use of languages, from English to French, those were the languages were around the house due to my father’s command and fluency in French, he was in school in Paris at the Sorbonne . I am the youngest sibling of four and my mother is a native of Canton, nowaday Guangdong, however, she was raised in Guangxi, on account of my maternal grandfather was a magistrate during the late Qing period , so there was the command of the “official language” , or so called 官话. Yes, the so-called Mandarin, the official language of the courts from Beijing. However, due to the diversity of languages inside China, all of these “official languages or 官话 carried with their local pronunciation. I had a wet nurse, who was from Suzhou, up river from the city of Shanghai. My paternal grandmother had her dialect from Yuyao, Zhejiang. Plus the servants and other people in the household also had their way to speak carrying on with different intonations. This is also how I have credited such “phonetic” exposure and its diversity had given me in my later years of my personal adaptation of the sounds and languages as this had shaped my multicultural observations and the eventual creation of Cross-cultural psychology that it had allowed me the creation of now the Psychology of Round and Square.
The Psychology of the Round and Square and its development has always been in that focus of a universal language and about communications, regardless of the differences in languages and cultures -- much of that focus remains the same with my earliest perception and about human harmony as well as with human conflicts. Basically it boils down to the three major issues involving harmony, conflict and solution (or not). Here is the new metamorphosis and changes in the use of these two signs of round and square -- whereas in human communications, there is the third shape of “Triangle” that has surfaced. This triangle form emerges from the square -- Here in the use of the shape of square, is when we began to form and to shape our views and opinion of an issue or a person. When that happens when we begin to scripting a person, often there are some outcomes where when such ideas and opinions, generally more rigid -- and where our different viewpoints and stances can take on a more rigid form, where the changes of the square shape can turn into the half of the square, thus, more of an attacking shape that is the “spear” shape of a triangle.
These three basic shapes, transforming from the earlier CS - Cultural Sphere of the Round and Square, had now moved into the communication zones as I have named these changes of the communication factors as CD, Communication Dynamics (sm). The CD is the forever exchanges of us humans that we do all time and all days. We read, we study, we observe and all are shaping our ideas into these three basic symbols of round, square and the “spearing” triangles.
These shapes have basically shaped had allowed me of my practice of this Psychology of the round and squares - As this had also allow me to returning my studies and to offer to China and Chinese of a possible new era of the observation of the study of psychology with both observations of cultures and a Chinese psychology of their own by way of cultures.
